DESCRIPTION OF MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performs professional veterinary work that involves the maintenance of wellness in a population of privately owned animals. Executes duties in accordance with standardized initiatives and policies.

May perform medical care and treatment or surgery. Maintains records in accordance with local and command policy.

Provides direction and oversight to Animal Health Assistants with regards to veterinary nursing skills, veterinary medical standards, and animal care.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Possess a degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree, i.e., Veterinary Medical Doctor (VMD), obtained at a school or college of veterinary medicine accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education (AVMA). Must possess an unrestricted, valid state license to practice veterinary medicine.

Best Qualified: Possess active United States Department of Agriculture/ Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA/APHIS) accreditation.

Physical requirement: Ability to lift 40 lbs and long periods of standing, restraining, kneeling, reaching and sitting, etc.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Satisfactory completion of pre-employment background checks in accordance with AR 215-3, 2-13, i. to include a Tier 1 or higher investigation if required depending by location.

Must not have an aversion to animals, blood, bodily fluids, animal tissues, strong odors, needles, or sharp instruments.

Ability to obtain/renew United States Department of Agriculture/Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA/APHIS) accreditation within first 60-days of employment.

Ability to work occasional Saturdays for special events - as needed by management.

Must be able to receive all mandated immunizations to work in a direct-patient capacity and/or veterinary environment IAW AR 40-562 Chap 4-1.

a. Exercises appropriate management responsibility (primary duty) over a recognized organizational unit with a continuing function, AND

c. Has the authority to make or recommend hiring, firing, or other status-change decisions, when such recommendations have particular weight.
  Note: Shared supervision or “matrix management” responsibility for a project team does not meet the above criteria. Limited "assistant manager" functions or "acting in the absence" of the manager does not meet the above criteria.

Or
d. Computer Employee, (See 5 CFR, 551.210 ) ( must meet salary test and perform such duties as system analysis, program/system design, or program/system testing, documentation, and modification). Computer manufacture or repair is excluded (non-exempt work).
5. Administrative Exemption:
a. Primary duty consistent with 5 CFR 551 (e.g.; non-manual work directly related to the management or general business operations of the employer or its customers), AND job duties require exercise of discretion & independent judgment.
